A bank statement may not show the full amount needed for IHT406. Ask the bank for the balance at the date of death and any interest earned up to that date but not yet paid. HMRC's IHT400 notes say to add the capital and interest together when the bank supplies separate figures.

### Which accounts belong on IHT406?

IHT406 accompanies an IHT400 account and lists accounts held in the deceased's sole name that were in credit at death, including cash ISAs, National Savings and Investments accounts and Premium Bonds. The English PDF linked by HMRC is marked 09/15. Its instructions split ordinary bank accounts from National Savings products, with separate totals transferred to the main account.

Jointly owned accounts belong on IHT404. Business accounts go on IHT413, and an overdrawn account is reported as a liability in IHT400 box 82. Do not enter an overdraft as a negative asset in the IHT406 bank table. If someone owed money to the deceased personally, the separate [IHT416 debts due to the estate](https://formspedia.com/uk/iht416/) schedule covers that type of asset.

### How to complete the account tables

Enter the deceased's name, date of death and Inheritance Tax reference if known. List each account or investment under its product category. The second page separates National Savings accounts, Premium Bonds and other NS&I products before combining them in box 5.

| Box | Details to enter | Where the total goes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Bank or building society name, account or reference number, and balance including interest at death. Include cash ISAs here, apart from National Savings accounts listed in box 2. | IHT400 box 52. |
| 2 | National Savings account type, account number and amount including interest. | Include in IHT406 box 5. |
| 3 | Premium Bond holder and bond numbers, bond value in column A, and unclaimed or uncashed prizes in column B. Add A and B. | Include in IHT406 box 5. |
| 4 | Other NS&I products, such as savings certificates or income bonds, with certificate numbers and values including interest. | Include in IHT406 box 5. |
| 5 | The combined totals of boxes 2, 3 and 4. | IHT400 box 54. |

### Interest, Premium Bonds and extra accounts

Use date-of-death figures from the bank or building society, including interest due but unpaid. The IHT400 notes apply the same addition of capital and unpaid interest to National Savings investments. For Premium Bonds, the form has a separate prize-value column: the bond value alone is not the complete box 3 entry when prizes remain unclaimed or uncashed.

If the tables run out of space, complete another copy of IHT406. The form also gives a Scotland-specific instruction: if you have completed inventory form C1, enter the total bank-account figure in IHT400 box 52. The IHT400 notes allow NS&I investments to be listed on C1 in Scotland, with their total entered in box 54.

### When and where to send the schedule

Send IHT406 with the IHT400 account and the other required schedules. The IHT400 notes for deaths on or after 1 January 2022 require the account within 12 months of death. That is the account-filing deadline; tax may have to be paid earlier in the probate process.

The notes give the postal destination as Inheritance Tax, HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1HT. Their checklist and regional probate instructions explain the accompanying papers. Use the two-page official IHT406 PDF below, and consult the appropriate IHT400 notes if the death occurred before 2022.
