A life policy can pay the estate on death, continue on another person's life or provide benefits through a trust. IHT410 asks different questions for each arrangement. Start with the policy documents and the insurer's figures so that a payment to the estate is not confused with the value of a policy that continues.

### Who needs to complete IHT410?

Use this schedule with IHT400 when the deceased paid regular or lump-sum premiums on the policies and investment products described in the form. These include life assurance, investment bonds and plans paying the estate on death, trust policies, and joint policies continuing after death. The policy can insure the deceased or someone else.

This guide follows HMRC's June 2026 revision. Purchased life annuities are covered, but pension annuities go on IHT409. The form explains that purchased life annuity payments contain income and capital elements; the insurer's letters supply that split.

### How to fill in the life assurance boxes

Questions 1 and 2 identify payments made to the estate because of the death. Ask the insurer for the amount payable, including bonuses, and use its policy number to identify each entry. The later questions deal with policies that remain in force.

| Question or box | What belongs there | Supporting record |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 and 2 | Whether an insurer pays the estate on death, then company name, policy number and amount including bonuses. | The insurer's death-claim statement. |
| 3 | A jointly owned policy that continues after death is directed to IHT404. | The joint policy and ownership details. |
| 4 and 5 | A continuing policy on another person's life from which the deceased was entitled to benefit. | The insurer's date-of-death valuation and a copy of each policy. |
| 6 | Add boxes 2 and 5; transfer the result to IHT400 box 57. | The two completed policy tables. |
| 7 to 9 | Continuing purchased-annuity payments, their remaining value and the annual capital/income split. | The annuity contract and insurer's letters. |
| 10 and 11 | A purchased-annuity lump sum payable on death. | The contract and lump-sum payment details. |

For Scottish estates, question 2 says policies already listed on the C1 inventory need not be listed again here, but their total must still be included. Box 5 asks for a copy of each policy as well as the insurance company's value at the date of death.

### Mortgage protection and joint policies

Keep the property, mortgage debt and protection policy as separate items. Where the deceased owned the property alone, the form directs the policy details to question 2. If the property was jointly owned, record the policy with the property and mortgage on IHT404.

Question 3 has another joint-policy route: a jointly owned assurance policy that continues after death belongs on IHT404, not in the IHT410 policy-value table. For example, a policy continuing until the surviving life assured dies needs that route checked even though it pays nothing on the first death. The separate [IHT405](https://formspedia.com/uk/iht405/) guide covers house and land details where that schedule is required.

### Purchased annuities: payments and lump sums

If purchased-annuity payments continue after death, question 8 asks who sold the policy, payment frequency, any increases during the remaining guaranteed period, the final guaranteed payment date and the value of the remaining payment right. Include that value in IHT400 box 76. The form points to HMRC's guaranteed annuities calculator for valuation help.

Question 9 separately asks for the gross annual payment and its capital and income parts. Use the insurer's figures. The annual payment is not the same figure as the value of the right to all remaining guaranteed payments.

For a death-triggered lump sum, question 11 asks for the provider and amount. If it is not payable to the estate, explain when and how the deceased disposed of the right to receive it. The box 11 total also feeds into IHT400 box 76.

### Gift and trust questions on the last page

Question 12 asks about premiums paid within seven years of death for someone else's benefit, excluding the deceased's spouse or civil partner. A yes answer directs the details to IHT403. Question 13 then asks whether an annuity was purchased at any time and requests its policy schedule and provisions if the answer is yes.

Question 14 deals with a right to benefit from insurance on another person's life held in trust. Where that applies, the form requires IHT418. If the trust terms or ownership of a policy are unclear, have the estate's tax adviser review the documents before deciding which values belong in the estate.

### Download IHT410 and send it with the account

The official publication page below supplies the four-page interactive PDF. HMRC instructs users to download it and use Adobe Reader for on-screen completion. Follow the question routes through all four pages, including the gift and trust questions.

IHT410 accompanies IHT400. The IHT400(2022) Notes set the account's submission deadline at 12 months from death. This is the reporting deadline; it does not extend the separate deadline for paying Inheritance Tax.
