Complete IHT415 for an inheritance still due at death. Split property and other assets, record debts and estimates, and transfer totals to IHT400 boxes 71 and 72.

This guide follows HMRC 01/18, checked against the official documents on 30 October 2026.

### Who needs IHT415 rather than a debt schedule?

Use IHT415 where the deceased was entitled to a legacy or share of an estate of someone who died before them, but had not received all of it when they died. Complete a separate schedule for each earlier estate. An inheritance still in administration is different from an ordinary debt owed to the deceased, covered by [IHT416](/uk/iht416/).

Ask the earlier estate’s personal representatives for the will or entitlement details, distributions already made, and assets and liabilities still held at the later death. Value the remaining entitlement at the date of the death being reported on IHT400, not automatically at the earlier death.

### How to complete the names, entitlement and value boxes

Start with the deceased’s name, date of death and Inheritance Tax reference if known. For the earlier deceased enter title, surname and first names, then follow boxes 1–10.

| Box | Information to enter |
| --- | --- |
| 1–3 | Earlier death date; Capital Taxes or Inheritance Tax reference if known; grant date if the reference is unknown and the grant date is known. |
| 4 | Nature of entitlement: cash legacy, specified asset or share of residue. Describe the entitlement. |
| 5–6 | Whether any part has already been received. If Yes, describe it in box 6; if No, go to box 7. |
| 7 | Remaining houses, land, buildings, business interests and shares or securities giving control; show descriptions, values and associated liabilities, then the net total. |
| 8 | Tick if box 7 includes an estimated value. |
| 9 | Other remaining assets, with descriptions, values and associated liabilities; calculate the net total. |
| 10 | Tick if box 9 includes an estimated value. |

For a specific asset, identify and value that asset at the later death. For a residuary entitlement, obtain the earlier representatives’ assets and liabilities at that date, and account for other legacies and payments still due before applying the deceased’s share. Show that calculation and avoid counting amounts already distributed twice.

### How estimates and IHT400 transfers work

If complete details cannot be obtained before the grant application, supply the information available and a reasonable estimate, marking box 8 or 10 as appropriate. Explain how it was estimated and seek the final figures from the earlier representatives. The current IHT400 notes require estimates to be identified and corrected when final information becomes available.

Transfer the net property and qualifying business/control-share amount in box 7 to IHT400 box 71. Transfer the net other-assets amount in box 9 to IHT400 box 72. Keep the two categories separate: a single inherited-estate total does not supply the requested split.

### When and where to send the schedule with the account

IHT415 has no separate signature block. It accompanies the signed IHT400 account, rather than being a stand-alone grant application. The IHT400 notes give the postal destination as Inheritance Tax, HM Revenue and Customs, BX9 1HT.

The account is normally due within 12 months of the date of death; tax payment is normally due earlier, at the end of the sixth month after the death, and may be needed before the grant. Use the current IHT400 notes for the estate’s reporting and payment obligations, including any exceptions. Completing IHT415 does not extend either deadline.

Retain the earlier estate’s entitlement and valuation evidence, distribution history and calculation of the remaining share. Attach explanatory calculations where the boxes cannot show the basis clearly, and give HMRC corrected figures when estimates are resolved.
